Ramya Mohan

Dr Ramya Mohan ( www.ramyamohan.com) is a senior UK board-certified NHS Developmental Consultant Psychiatrist , Medical Educator, Music Composer, trained Singer, exhibiting Artist, invited Author, Orator and Humanitarian working across Asia and Europe for international Community Development.

An alumna of Bangalore Medical College (India), Ramya completed her MRCPsych with South London and the Maudsley on the Guy’s, King’s and St Thomas hospitals training scheme. Following her sub-specialisation on the Great Ormond Street /Royal London training programme, she was awarded a board-certification in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry through the London Deanery. She has worked as a Consultant Psychiatrist (CAMHS, Developmental Neuropsychiatry and Learning Disability of childhood and adolescence ) on the NHS since 2008, with Oxleas Partnership, Surrey and Borders Partnership and Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation trusts. She is trained in the ADOS ,3Di , EMDR and Mindfulness and holds a clinical certificate form the British Association of Psychopharmacology. Her special interests and expertise are in the areas of Paediatric Psychopharmacology and Neurodevelopmental Psychiatry. Her academic presentations ,publications and invited authorships include the World Psychiatric Association Conference & Journal, The Royal College of Psychiatrists International Conference UK, European Psychiatric Association Conference, Journal of European Psychiatry, The British Medical Journal, Schizophrenia Research etc. Her research interests & expertise are in the cognitive neuroscience of creativity and psycho-oncology.

As a Qualified Educational Supervisor and Medical Educator (KSS Deanery), Ramya is actively involved in teaching medical students and postgraduates on the NHS . She supports Psychiatry and CAMHS trainees as a specialty champion for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry ( Health Education England) . She is visiting expert faculty for the College of Counselling and Psychotherapy Education , London. She is a Committee member for the Association of Child & Adolescent Mental Health UK International (India)

Ramya has been teaching and expert faculty as part of a UK-India mental health training initiatives (UK-India voluntary sector collaborations -Concern for Mental Health UK & Mukul Madhav Foundation) and pan-India school training programmes (eg., The Live, Laugh, Love Foundation). She has extensive experience in international community development (in the context of the UK and Indian healthcare systems /communities) and contributes her expertise actively to the voluntary sector across the UK and India. She has been on the Autism Surrey board.

The Royal College of Psychiatrists UK have commended Ramya as a global pioneer in amalgamating Creative Arts and Neuroscience for youth and societal development , awarding her a fellowship for distinctive contributions to world Psychiatry (2018) and shortlisting her nomination twice for the Royal College of Psychiatrists ‘Communicator of the year ‘ national awards in 2019 and 2020.Her original work has pioneered a global movement in integrating music and the creative arts with Psychiatry for optimal mental health across the west and the east over the years. Her internationally acclaimed neuroscientific therapeutic technique CAPE : Creative Arts for Processing Emotions ® has dedicated users across the globe. To maximise accessibility and reach in areas with minimal infrastructure, training and community outreach around mental health , CAPE is now being taken forward as an integrated web-based mental health platform and app in collaboration with the prestigious Indian Institute of Management (NSRCEL) as incubation partner. This is an important step in her mission to optimise accessibility/reach and enhance the potential of creativity in healing and supporting mental health. Alongside being an NHS CAMHS consultant and initiating clinical CAMHS work in India with her home community, Ramya is the Medical Director and Creative Head of I MANAS London, a trail-blazing organisation with and established body of globally acclaimed work in integrating Medicine, Music, Art, Neuroscience and Ability in societies through high-impact events, global projects and large-scale media awareness work across the UK and India. She has two music albums and three video singles to her credit as a composer, singer and performer, in collaboration with artists and communities worldwide, including Indian and British Arts & Culture and British Hollywood.

She is a veritable ambassador for Indian Arts (Music and Fine Art), having worked tirelessly to showcase their role in supporting and sustaining mental health in communities worldwide.

Formally trained in Carnatic and Hindustani classical music, Ramya firmly believes in the healing and therapeutic power of music, incorporating this approach into her medical practice to promote recovery from illness and aid personality development in children and young people. Her live performances on an esteemed world stage have won accolades. She is a music composer, lyricist and singer for many music projects, having conceptualised, composed and sung the vocals for two internationally acclaimed ‘Music meets Medicine’ albums: CAPE and CAPE:Youth, which have garnered acclaim on world media. She has three popular fusion music video singles to her credit.

Ramya has been an invited speaker on prestigious global platforms: A TEDx speaker on the power of Music and Creative Art in mental health (A symphony of Science, Music and Art),The House of Lords and The House of Commons (British Parliament ), The Mental Wealth Festival, London (‘The role of music and creativity in mental health and emotional well-being’), Sannidhi Arts/ Milapfest, Mangalore University, St Joseph’s Educational Institutions etc. Ramya is a regular invited expert contributor to The Huffington Post, Herald, Change board etc. She has been published in peer-reviewed journals and presented at international conferences on mental health on this area of expertise. Her expert opinion and original articles on mental health are highly regarded , published in innumerable national/local newspapers, online portals amp; magazines. She has been an invited expert Psychiatrist for live call-ins on the BBC Asian Network and Indian TV Channels around supporting Asian mental health, vulnerabilities and sensitivities with music.

In 2016,Ramya released her innovative, self-guided therapeutic technique ‘CAPE: Creative Arts for Processing Emotions ™,followed by CAPE: Youth (2017),a version for young people. She has pioneered the use of creative arts to support mental health in high-need populations across Europe and Australasia and is a global opinion leader on the subject. For the first time ever, young people whose lives have been transformed by CAPE have come forward to talk about their experiences in a powerful video emphasizing the crucial role of creative arts in mental health.
